Medical Assistant (MA) is an allied health professional who plays an integral role within a healthcare team.  Medical Assistants are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties to assist physicians and other healthcare professionals in patient care.



Program Details

  • Up to 10 students selected

  • 10 month certificate program September 10, 2018 through June 28, 2019

  • Tuition - $3,000 (upon acceptance, NM employees in good standing can use the tuition reimbursement benefit to pay for fees)

  • This is not yet an accredited program.  Northwestern Memorial HealthCare is seeking accreditation for the MA Program.

Program Duration
MA Program is 10 months long
9 month classroom/lab instruction (20 hours per week);
Dates: September 10, 2018 - May 29, 2019
Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 am - 1:00 pm


1 month/160 hour mandatory clinical externship (40 hours per week);

Dates: June 3, 2019 - June 28, 2019

Hours: Monday through Friday full time/daytime hours


Eligible Applicants

- Student with minimum high school diploma or GED with a "C" average or above

- NM employee in good standing, seeking Medical Assistant certification



Application deadline: June 22, 2018



  • All applicants must pass the ACCUPLACER exam
  • Testing dates: June 28 & June 29, 2018
  • Applicants will be notified of testing times once complete application is received
  • Testing location: NM Clinical Schools, 541 N. Fairbanks Ct., Suite 950, Chicago, IL 60611


Interview/Selection Process

  • Interviews: July 19 & 20, 2018
  • Applicants notified of acceptance status: July 25, 2018
  • First day of program/orientation: September 10, 2018



Program Completion

  • Complete all scheduled classes for program with an average grade of "C" or above
  • Complete MA requirements for clinical and administrative competencies
  • Complete 160 hours of clinical externship
  • Receive certificate upon completion of the program

One NM Clinical Schools Medical Assistant Program Letter of Recommendation Form (attached).  Please provide this form to one reference (NM Employees: form should be completed by department manager or lead personnel; Other Candidates: form should be completed by manager or instructor of most current or most recent job/school). The letter of recommendation is to be sent directly from your reference to NM Clinical Schools Registrar.



2. Official e-transcripts from high school/GED completion, or degree program (if applicable).  Transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to NM Clinical Schools Registrar.  (*If e-transcripts not available, please request official transcripts to be mailed).
