The Laboratory Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and facilitating the prompt, efficient, and accurate delivery of laboratory services in the absence of the Laboratory Medical Director, or Leadership Staff.  The Laboratory Shift Supervisor is to be knowledgeable in all technical areas and will perform testing and resolve technical problems when necessary.  The Laboratory Shift Supervisor is to act as the Liaison for the laboratory with other hospital staff, organization affiliates and HealthLab Clients to meet the organization’s mission and service standards. Role Specific Roles and Responsibilities: Performs moderate and (if applicable) high complexity testing accurately and efficiently.  Follows lab procedures carefully. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing. Understands the theory behind all testing and is able to troubleshoot utilizing the knowledge of that theory. Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Oversees computer downtime procedures during assigned shift. Properly handles Anatomic Pathology specimens and send out specimens. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific reference ranges and critical values for all services provided. Prioritizes work correctly and is able to multi-task. Maintains high visibility in work areas and provides leadership for daily operations. Creates positive learning environment when instructing new employees; presents information clearly, concisely, and at an appropriate pace. Communication and Collaboration: Communicated verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Participate in teaching of students and other health professionals, as required. Provides information regarding specimen collection, sample requirements, expected turn-around-times, and age specific reference ranges. Takes a proactive approach to meeting the needs of patients, physicians and clients. Demonstrates the value of team on a consistent basis.  Interacts with all team members in a professional manner. Administration and Documentation: Assists managers and directors in service development, policies, and procedures. Completes the continuing education requirement of 12 hours per year for certified employees. Participates in CE Programs, in-services, lab meetings, and various committees (i.e. safety committee, QI committee). Provides accurate computer and non-computer data.  Is able to retrieve lab results in the laboratory, Pathology and hospital systems.  Files and reviews reports in laboratory computer system.  Prints and/or faxes reports as requested. Leadership: Assumes a supervisory role in appropriate situations.  Responds to questions regarding services.  Accurately assesses problems utilizing problem solving skills. Holds staff and self accountable for following hospital and lab policies and procedures. Provides information regarding specimen collection, sample requirements, expected turn-around-times, and age specific reference ranges. Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting. Required: Bachelor Requirement: Upon hire must provide hard copy of diploma and/or transcripts of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health qualifying the applicant to take the national ASCP certifying exam.  Must provide proof of Education as stated in the CLIA guidelines. Certification Requirement: Must obtain Medical Technologist (MT) (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 1 year of hire date. Individual must meet requirements for performing high complexity testing as defined by federal licensing guidelines (CLIA) and accreditation agencies (TJC, CAP). Experience: At least three years of clinical experience in a TJC or CAP accredited laboratory in the section they are to supervise. Preferred: 5 years of clinical lab experience in a TJC or CAP accredited laboratory in the section they are to supervise.
